Fat Gripz

Fat Gripz are clamp-on rubber sleeves that wrap around a barbell, dumbbell, pull-up bar or cable handle to make it thicker. They are the best-known thick-grip attachment and a common first step into thick bar training, because they need no dedicated bar. The brand's site gives its trading name as Fat Gripz Enterprises, dating from 2008.

Models

Model Grip diameter
Fat Gripz One 1.75 in (4.5 cm)
Fat Gripz Pro 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
Fat Gripz Extreme 2.75 in (7 cm)

Some older listings call the 2.25-inch size the "Original"; the current range sells it as the Pro. The One is the smallest and the Extreme the thickest.

Use and limits

Because they fit almost any handle, Fat Gripz let a lifter add a thick grip to rows, curls, pull-ups, deadlifts and carries without buying separate thick bars. A rubber sleeve does not behave like a solid steel bar of the same diameter, so a lift with Fat Gripz is not comparable with a lift on an axle or a competition thick handle. For dedicated thick bars and their diameters, see Axle and Thick Bars. For training, see Support Grip: How to Train It.
